Frequently Asked Questions
You have questions, we have answers
How does it work?
The device is a cellular modem with a GPS receiver. The device transmits the location of your vehicle as it moves around on Earth's surface.
These transmissions are recieved by our software then presented to you.
Typically, device location data is updated in the platform every 5 minutes while the vehicle is in motion and every 12 hours while motionless.
What is "GPS"?
GPS is an acronym for Global Positioning System: a constellation of ~30 strategically spaced satellites orbiting Earth.
Our software utilizes geographic data collected from these satellites to pinpoint the (near-exact) location of your GPS-enabled device.
How reliable is the system?
We have a 99% reliability of the platform using multiple servers to keep you up-to-date with immediate location data.
Occasionally the device may lose cellular signal (similar to your mobile phone losing signal) but the device's on-board memory will hold the plotted information until it can reconnect. When the device is without a signal, it constantly searches for the nearest cell signal.
Sometimes when a vehicle is driven into a large underground parking structure or a metal building with few or no windows, the device may lose signal. Once the vehicle exits the "dead-zone" location, it immediately attempts to regain a cellular signal and continue operating normally.
How much power does it draw on the vehicle?
The device operates in either a Deep Sleep or Sleep on Network state while the vehicle is motionless, i.e., parked.
The device draws a miniscule amount of amperage while the vehicle is motionless, roughly equivalent to that of your radio's head unit.
Once vehicle motion is detected (driving/in-tow) or the ignition is turned on, the device operates in an Active Tracking state.
GPS Device State | Power Consumption |
---|---|
Deep Sleep | <3mA @ 12V |
Sleep on Network | <10mA @ 12V |
Active Tracking | <70mA @ 12V |
Will it tell me the history of where the vehicle has been?
The platform holds the last 90 days of device history. You may view your device's history at any time in the platform.
Is the reported mileage on the platform accurate?
Yes, the platform records mileage post install and adds it to your vehicle's original mileage.
If you didn't input your vehicle's starting mileage post install, then the reported mileage will only count miles driven post install. This can be updated at any time.
Where is the device installed?
The device should be installed by a Terminus GPS professional in a strategic location in the vehicle for maximum coverage while remaining hidden from the outside.
Professionally installed devices don't interfere with other vehicle electronics.
What is a geofence area?
A geofence area is a section of Earth's surface you designate as a place or point of interest, e.g., school, home, work, friend's house.
You may create geofence areas in the platform.
When will it tell me that the vehicle has reached a geofence area?
The platform saves the alert in history as soon as the device reports it.
When the vehicle exits or enters geofence area, an alert may be dispatched to your mobile phone[1].
Can I install this myself?
While we offer plug-and-play devices, we always recommend our customers opt for a professionally installed device first.
Remember: an easy install is a trivial uninstall!
